The Temple
At the center of Jerusalem stands the Temple, rebuilt on a monumental scale under Herod the Great. Pilgrims come here to pray, offer sacrifices, and take part in the great Jewish festivals. Priests perform the rituals of the sanctuary, while only a small number may enter its most sacred spaces. For Jesus and his contemporaries, this is not simply a landmark: it is the holiest place in Jewish life.
